This collection of interactive digital books are a collaboration between the Yupiit School District and the Association of Alaska School Boards (AASB).
The books were created during a series of two-day "Book Slam" workshops held in Yupiit schools during the 2018-19 school year.
Students, teachers, elders, community members, and district staff were involved in illustrating, translating, and narrating the books, which feature local stories, language, and culture.
During the two-day Book Slam workshops, AASB staff worked with local people at each school to facilitate the creation of page art illustrations, translation of bilingual text, and recording of spoken audio in Yup'ik and English. These multimedia components were then used to construct the interactive digital books. All of the Book Slam books created are copyrighted and owned by the district.
Cultural identity is an important element of student academic success and well-being. We hope you enjoy reading these books as much as we enjoyed making them! What stories do you want to tell next? What books do you want to write and publish?
Three books were created with the Yupiit School District during the 2018-19 school year, and three more Book Slam events are scheduled to take place in the 2019-20 school year. Here are links to read the first three books online, or download them to your computer or mobile device:
