ARCHIVES

Each Regional Educational Attendance Area (REAA) is a school district in a rural area of Alaska. Yupiit School District is located in the REAA #23. Elections of the school board members are conducted by the Division of Elections and elections are held annually on the first Tuesday in October.

To file for a vacant seat, a candidate must be registered and reside within the boundaries of the section of the REAA or CRSA assigned to the seat for which they are filing. A Declaration of Candidacy must be received by the first Friday in August if it is being filed in person, or postmarked by the first Friday in August and received within ten days to be valid for the election.

Each term of office is for three years. If a bard member resigns before their term is up, and the Division of Elections is notified by July 15, that seat will be on the ballot of the election held that year. If a board member resigns after July 15, another person is appointed by the board to serve until the following regular election. The seat is listed on the next appropriate ballot, and a candidate is then voted on to complete the term of office.

REAA# 23 School Board candidates are nominated by section and elected at large. To be elected, candidates must receive a 30 percent majority of the votes cast.
